What is Supportive In-Home Services? When we want to develop life skills, we may not have such straightforward methods available. In fact, we may not even be aware that life skills are learnable, believing instead that the toolkit we are given by our parents should suffice for the rest of our lives. But when we look more carefully, we discover that many life skills can be improved through study, expert input, natural supports, and practice.
Through skills training, ABILITIES Beyond Disabilities Supportive In-Home services can improve the program participant’s ability to succeed at every-day challenges. For example, they will obtain, refine, or maintain skills that can be used to increase harmony with others, increase their ability to cope, and improve their mood. Supportive In-Home provides a system of support for individuals who require more support than minimal supervision, but less than group home living.
The Supportive In-Home program provides an excellent system of support for children and adults living in community living or family living homes who are able to reside more independently and require a less restrictive environment than the congregate setting. Supportive In-Home services are available for anyone with a primary or dual diagnosis of intellectual disability.
These services consist of a variety of skills-building activities and/or support programs designed to acquire, refine, or maintain an optimum level of functional skills necessary to live in a community setting: daily living skills, community integration, socialization, behavior, use of community resources, independent living, recreation/leisure, health and safety, and self-advocacy skills.
Supports are rendered primarily in the program participant’s own home or in a residence considered to be his/her home, and within the community. ABILITIES Beyond Disabilities will assist individuals to continue living independently.
Program participants will be encouraged to participate in the community to their fullest ability to establish community presence and respect as valuable members of the community. Community integration and inclusion opportunities will be provided to advocate for each individual’s social growth and use of community resources.
